Data status
What the words in a panel's status strip mean — live, stale, offline, history gap — and the notes and warnings a panel shows when its data is incomplete.
A chart that has stopped updating can look exactly like a quiet market. So every panel says, along its bottom edge, whether what it draws is live and complete. Read it whenever the chart looks wrong.
The status strip
The strip at the bottom of each panel has three parts: a status word on the left, the market the panel is on, and a note on the right. When there is nothing to report, the note is simply the chart type.
Status words
A panel shows the most urgent of these:
| Word | Meaning | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| error | The panel could not load its data, or TapeHawk refused the symbol. | Pick another symbol, or reload the page. |
| no data | The data loaded, but there is nothing in it for this symbol and width. | Try another timeframe or symbol. |
| loading… | History is being fetched. | Wait a moment. |
| offline | Your browser's connection to TapeHawk dropped. What you see is frozen at the moment it dropped. | It reconnects by itself; check your internet connection if it does not. |
| stale | TapeHawk is connected, but its feed from the exchange for this market has stopped. Prices on screen are not current. | Wait; it turns live again when the exchange feed returns. |
| history gap | The bars are live, but history was cut where TapeHawk's recording was interrupted, so earlier bars are missing. Hover the word for the explanation. | Nothing to fix — the missing stretch was never recorded. |
| live | Live and complete. | — |
On a phone, the same states colour the dot in the top bar.
Notes
The right-hand note carries one fact at a time, the most important first:
| Note | Meaning |
|---|---|
| cannot reach the exchange from your network — the heatmap of this symbol needs a direct connection to the exchange… | A heatmap on a live-only symbol reads the order book straight from the exchange, and your network cannot reach it. Candles and trades are unaffected. See Symbols and venues. |
| heatmap is not available for this symbol yet — pick a symbol with an order book, or another chart type | A heatmap on a live-only symbol of an exchange TapeHawk cannot read a book from directly. |
| live from when you opened it — order book read directly from the exchange, no history | A heatmap on a live-only symbol: it began when you opened the panel and has no recorded history behind it. |
| start of recorded history | You scrolled back to the oldest bar TapeHawk keeps. |
| history stops here — ingest was interrupted | Scrolling back stopped at a break in the recording; older bars cannot be joined to these. |
| loading recorded history… | A heatmap is loading recorded order book as you scroll back. |
| history paused — retries by itself if the service was busy, otherwise drag again | A stretch of recorded order book could not be fetched. When TapeHawk was busy or unreachable the heatmap asks again by itself after a short wait; otherwise drag the heatmap again. |
| end of history — 24 hours is all that is kept | A heatmap reached the oldest recorded order book. |
| 4h — panel only fits 3h4m (for example) | The heatmap panel is too narrow for its range. Widen it or pick a shorter range. |
| filling — 3m/5m (for example) | The heatmap's recording does not yet cover the whole range. |
| no marks in recorded history | A heatmap scrolled into recorded history has no order-flow marks for that stretch. |
| no trade bubbles in recorded history | The same, for trade bubbles. |
| absorption — 20m of 2h (for example) | Absorption marks on the heatmap reach back less far than the order book on screen. |
| Automatic (by px) · step 5 (for example) | On a footprint panel with nothing else to report: how the rows are grouped, and the price step of one row. |
On Heikin Ashi, Renko, range bars and line break, hover the chart type in the note for a reminder of how the shape differs from real prices — see Candle shapes.
Other signs on a panel
- Scroll to realtime, at the bottom right of the plot, means you are looking at the past; click it to jump back to the newest bar.
- A ⚠ on an indicator's row in the info bar means that indicator is not drawing correctly. Hover it for the reason — for example The server has stopped sending values for this indicator. What is drawn is the last it sent, dimmed; it fills in again by itself. or Too many candles on screen for this indicator to read. Scroll forward, or zoom in, and it draws again. The phone layout has no indicator rows, so it has no ⚠ either.
- A banner across the plot saying Chart layer stopped — what is on screen may be out of date. Reload if it persists. means part of the chart stopped redrawing, so the picture may be out of date. Reload the page if it stays.
- Restoring chart… appears briefly when the browser has taken the chart's graphics context away and the chart is rebuilding it.
- A note that some drawings are hidden, beside the market name, means objects on this symbol could not be drawn. They are still saved, and the chart tries again when you edit them.
- A newer version of the app is available — an indicator you just changed cannot be computed until you reload. — TapeHawk was updated while the page was open, and an indicator you changed cannot be computed until you reload. Press Reload.
